Sip...Savor...And Fall in Love!
WINE LOVERS tells the story of a charming artist, Brian Scott, and a know-it-all business woman, Katherine Reese – two seemingly incompatible students attending a wine class led by effervescent wine connoisseur Charles Thompson, whose goal in life is to impart the pleasures of selecting and drinking wine. Over the course of 70 minutes, Brian, Katherine and the audience learn all about reds, whites, screw caps, Zinfandels…and a little bit about love.

“The original concept came out of the inherent theatricality of a wine class, and the reasons why people attend such a class,” says Michael Green, the show’s creator, who served as Gourmet Magazine’s exclusive Wines and Spirits Consultant for 19 years. “Wine is such a romantic beverage that turning a wine tasting into a musical love story just felt natural.”
WINE LOVERS features a score written by international wine expert Michael Green and jazz pianist Gary Negbaur, with a book by Travis Kramer with additional contributions by Green and Negbaur. The show is produced and directed by Holly-Anne Ruggiero (Broadway: Jersey Boys, Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays) and choreographed by Holly Cruz (Broadway: Seussical, Cats), and stars Jamie Wax in the lead role.
1) Maso Canali Pinot Grigio 2009 (Trentino, Italy)
Pinot Grigio is one of the classic and most prolific grapes in Northern Italy, and this version is stellar. Light, clean, crisp and dry, the wine finishes with notes of lemon and stone fruit and a soft mouth feel. Fabrizio Gatto, one of the premier winemakers in Italy today, believes that only by using the best grapes possible can a winemaker reflect the full spectrum of balanced fruit flavors in each bottle of finished wine.
2) McWilliam's Chardonnay 2008 (South Eastern Australia)
Family owned since 1877, McWilliam's is Australia's most award-winning winery. The McWilliams family has premium vineyard holdings throughout the most prestigious wine growing regions of South Eastern Australia. The specially selected parcels of Chardonnay were harvested in the cool of the night to preserve the fresh fruit flavors. The wine boasts flavors of warm tropical fruit with hints of vanilla and banana.
3) Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (Marlborough, New Zealand)
Don't be scared or turned off by the screw cap! Most New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines sport screw caps and the Marlborough region produces some of the best versions in the world. Marked by glorious notes of grapefruit and lime and a lively acidity, it is no surprise that this grape is one of the most food friendly white wines in the world.
4) Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (California)
A classic example of a full bodied but soft Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the most prolific grapes in California, Cabernet remains the people's choice for red wine. Aromas of black fruit and oak leap from the glass. The finish is dry without being overly tannic. Bring on the beef!
5) Red Rock Merlot 2009 (California)
Merlot has been called by some (me!) as Cabernet Sauvignon in silk pajamas! This version is soft and fleshy with flavors of blackberry, plum and cherry. The lovely notes of toasted oak round off this well made wine. While perfect with a wide range of foods including steak and cheese, it is sublime with many lamb dishes.
6) Wycliff California Champagne Brut (California)
Though not from the region of Champagne, this California sparkler is still a delight. Like Champagne, the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation but unlike Champagne the fermentation occurs before bottling. Armed with crisp acidity and a touch of residual sugar, it is so versatile that it works well with oysters or desserts. This is an affordable sparkler that you can buy and gulp by the case.
